Volunteer: Eyes on the Lake Outreach Team at Commons Beach, Tahoe City

Aquatic invasive species are a growing threat to Lake Tahoe’s clarity, ecology, and infrastructure. Golden mussels, a new threat recently discovered nearby, could spread rapidly and change our blue Lake to green.

We are seeking volunteers to help educate and inform at Tahoe’s high-volume beaches and lakes, aiming to prevent Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) from entering Lake Tahoe. With the emerging threat from golden mussels, we need volunteers now more than ever before to help Keep Tahoe Blue!

What to expect:

Learn About the Threat: Understand how golden mussels and other invasive species endanger Tahoe’s ecosystem and what can be done to stop them.Get Trained to Take Action: This training prepares volunteers to engage with the public at beaches, marinas, and launch sites throughout Tahoe, sharing information about the Clean, Drain, Dry protocol and other prevention tools.Help Spread the Word: Eyes on the Lake Outreach Team members, once trained, will go to high-traffic areas and educate the community and hand out information, alerting non-motorized users about the threat of golden mussels and informing them about Clean, Drain, Dry and the Tahoe Keepers Program.Science-Backed and Community-Led: Hosted by Keep Tahoe Blue and TRPA experts, this session combines scientific insight with practical ways you can make a difference.

Keep Tahoe Blue is seeking volunteers to help collect parking data at Emerald Bay. This effort will support ongoing work to better understand and manage visitation in this high-use area.

We are recruiting teams of at least three volunteers to conduct shoulder parking counts along SR 89, between the switchbacks and just past the viaduct along the shoulder of the highway.

What you’ll do:

Conduct visual counts of shoulder-parked vehicles Record data using a provided form Complete car counts hourly

Team roles (3 people required):

Driver Counter for the lake side of the road Counter for the mountain side of the road

Counters will record the number of vehicles parked within designated zones along the highway.

What you’ll need:

A vehicle to transport your team A team of three volunteers (you plus two others)Come to the office before/at the start of your shift to receive materials and training from staff

What we provide:

Training, materials (including paper form, clicker, and clipboard), and instructions for data collection will be provided from Keep Tahoe Blue staff members

Time commitment: Volunteer shifts are approximately 4.5 hours, depending on conditions, however if volunteers are out in the field for longer than 4.5 hours, to update me at julie@keeptahoeblue.org so I can make sure your time is reflected accurately.

Keep Tahoe Blue is seeking volunteers to help collect parking data at Emerald Bay. This effort will support ongoing work to better understand and manage visitation in this high-use area.

We are recruiting teams of at least three volunteers to conduct shoulder parking counts along SR 89, between the switchbacks and just past the viaduct along the shoulder of the highway.

What you’ll do:

Conduct visual counts of shoulder-parked vehicles Record data using a provided form Complete car counts hourly

Team roles (3 people required):

Driver Counter for the lake side of the road Counter for the mountain side of the road

Counters will record the number of vehicles parked within designated zones along the highway.

What you’ll need:

A vehicle to transport your team A team of three volunteers (you plus two others)Come to the office before/at the start of your shift to receive materials and training from staff

What we provide:

Training, materials (including paper form, clicker, and clipboard), and instructions for data collection will be provided from Keep Tahoe Blue staff members

Time commitment: Volunteer shifts are approximately 4.5 hours, depending on conditions, however if volunteers are out in the field for longer than 4.5 hours, to update me at julie@keeptahoeblue.org so I can make sure your time is reflected accurately.

Do you love to kayak, paddleboard, and walk on the shoreline of Lake Tahoe? Then join us for a free Eyes on the Lake training! This training is open to the public, all ages welcome.

Learn how to identify Tahoe’s various native and invasive aquatic plants, and how to report observations that allow Keep Tahoe Blue and our partners to control new populations of aquatic invaders before they do lasting damage to Lake Tahoe. We want to be sure that Lake Tahoe remains clear and blue!

Our friends from Tahoe Keepers and the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board will be joining the this training and sharing tips on how to clean, drain, and dry your equipment as well as how to identify potential harmful algae blooms (HABs).
