Volunteer: Snapshot Day Team Leader Training - 5/1/2026

Sign up to be a Team Leader at the 26th Annual Tahoe Truckee Snapshot Day!

Snapshot Day is an annual water quality monitoring event held each May. Groups of volunteers fan out across the Truckee River Watershed to take samples from creeks, streams, and lakes—including Lake Tahoe—to capture a snapshot of Tahoe’s water quality at a moment in time. Volunteers of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to join us as we sample various sites around South Lake Tahoe for things like dissolved oxygen, pH, nutrients and more! To learn more about Snapshot Day and to view the 2024 map and Annual Snapshot Day Report, click here.

At the Team Leader Training, team leaders will learn how to collect data for the day accurately and how to guide their team of 5-10 citizen scientists to success by conducting water sampling at different locations around South Lake Tahoe. You can choose your own team members or be assigned a group of volunteers.

Team leaders (new and returning) are required to attend the training. This is where you will get hands on practice using all of the testing materials that we will be using in the field on Snapshot Day and be able to ask any questions of our Snapshot Day experts. We will also confirm your sampling locations during this training.

Sign up:

Click the blue "Sign Up" button to sign up. Each volunteer will need to sign up and complete a waiver individually.

Location: Room S104 at Lake Tahoe Community College (1 College Dr, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150).

Volunteer: Eyes on the Lake Outreach Team at Baldwin Beach

Join our frontline volunteer team to help protect our waters from Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS). With the emerging threat of golden mussels, your presence on the shoreline matters now more than ever.

Volunteers will visit high-traffic recreation areas to share quick, helpful guidance with the public and distribute information to non-motorized users about the risk posed by golden mussels. You’ll also help promote the Eyes on the Lake Program and Tahoe Keepers Program, educating the public on the proper Clean, Drain, and Dry steps. While you’re out in the field, you’ll tally the number of beachgoers you speak with and the number of non-motorized watercraft you observe. We’ll provide the materials and training you need to conduct friendly outreach and collect simple data during your shift.

Shifts are one hour long, and you’re welcome to sign up for multiple consecutive shifts on any given day if you’d like to stay out longer. Volunteering can be even more enjoyable in pairs or small groups - feel free to invite family and friends to sign up and join you!

Before heading into the field, volunteers are required to watch a one-hour prerecorded Eyes on the Lake Team Training and email protect@keeptahoeblue.org to coordinate picking up materials from the Keep Tahoe Blue office between Mondays and Fridays (2877 Lake Tahoe Blvd. South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150). The training highlights specific areas that are current priorities based on need, but we also welcome volunteers to support this Eyes on the Lake Outreach initiative wherever they’re recreating. Please sign up based on location site.

Volunteer: Tahoe Forest Stewardship Day - Spring - 6/13/2026

What we are doing: Join us for a hands-on restoration project at Marlette Creek, near Thunderbird Lodge on Lake Tahoe’s east shore. This site was restored in fall 2025 to improve water quality, stream function, riparian habitat, and fish habitat, and to reduce erosion and stormwater impacts from nearby roadways. After winter conditions, the area now needs additional planting and follow‑up care to help the restoration fully succeed.

As a volunteer, you’ll help with planting native vegetation and other restoration tasks that stabilize the stream bank, strengthen riparian habitat, and prevent further erosion. Work may also include assisting with adaptive management activities that support long‑term stream health, such as enhancing floodplain roughness or helping with light vegetation management under staff guidance.

This is a fun, hands‑on restoration event open to volunteers of all ages and skill levels. You’ll work alongside restoration professionals and fellow volunteers to make a meaningful impact on a Lake Tahoe watershed. No prior experience is required—tools, training, and support will be provided. Come prepared to get a little dirty and be part of restoring a healthier, more resilient stream ecosystem.

Parking location: Parking will be limited. Please carpool, if possible. More information to come on variety of parking locations available.

Meeting location: Chimney Beach Parking Area (Along Hwy 28 near Geo Whittell Rd, Carson City, NV)

Program: Tahoe Forest Stewardship Days
